The machines that ended the old world — and the ones that can rebuild or destroy the new one.

Afterworld Remnant Technology

Remnant technology is Afterworld’s answer to the question every post-apocalyptic game eventually faces: what do you do with the old world’s toys? Official materials describe pre-Fall artifacts as a source of power that can rewrite what your nation is capable of — and a warning that the same technology that ended the old world could end the new one. This is not a simple tech tree with safe upgrades. Remnant discoveries are encounters, not clicks. Some are recoverable. Some are traps. Some require choices your nation will live with for generations. This page is the pre-release field guide. The game is upcoming on Steam with no date.

Read this beside the Ideas Tree for how remnant discoveries unlock new advances, and beside ancient-tyrants for who still understands these machines. For how remnant tech appears in combat, see the combat guide.

What remnant technology is

The official store copy uses the word “remnant” to describe pre-Fall technology left behind after the cataclysm that ended the old world. This is not antique curios. The ign preview notes that the types of technology you might rediscover include nanotech, combat mechs, and other sci-fi spectacles — the result of a war that pushed technological development past our current ceiling, the way World War Two pushed from wooden biplanes to jetfighters in under a decade.

Remnant tech appears as discoveries on the map. Eurogamer’s hands-on describes sending rangers into devastated cities to recover old-world tech. The yield is unpredictable. Some provinces contain dormant caches. Others contain active defense systems. The encounter mechanic is part of why scouting with the right officer matters.

The Ideas Tree connection

The Ideas Tree is how remnant discoveries become usable advances. Finding a remnant cache in a ruined city is the encounter; the Tree decides whether your nation can research it, what it costs, and what it unlocks. Remnant tech is therefore a category of trigger for the Tree — one that can introduce advances no other encounter type can offer.

The official warning is explicit: remnant power can rewrite what your nation is capable of, and the same power that ended the old world could end the new one. This is not a moral flourish. The ancient-tyrants page describes how some Ancients still control the most powerful remnants — and how challenging them or serving them is partly a question of who gets to use which machines.

Categories of remnant discovery

Based on official descriptions and press coverage:

Power systems. Pre-Fall energy generation, including reactor designs that may explain why the shelter systems in the Shelterborn start are failing. These connect to the settlement upgrade tree.

Military hardware. Combat mechs, autonomous drones, and other weapons systems. Eurogamer’s hands-on mentions war drones as hostile encounters in provincial tiles. Some remnant military tech can be salvaged and deployed.

Medical technology. Nanotech and other life-extension treatments — the category of remnant tech that connects most directly to the Ancients, since immortals need some explanation for why they are still alive.

Industrial machinery. Manufacturing and construction equipment that can accelerate settlement building, farming, and resource processing.

Information archives. Data storage from before the Fall that can unlock Ideas, provide historical context, and — potentially — reveal secrets about what actually caused the cataclysm.

The risk calculus

Every remnant discovery carries a risk calculation. The destructoid preview quotes Lind making this explicit in a different context: taking a remnant shortcut to power means taking the same path the old world took. If that world ended in nuclear fire, a remnant tech that mimics that path is not a safe choice.

The ign hands-on preview frames it as a design philosophy: Afterworld leans into the “what if we pushed things pretty far” side of speculative sci-fi, but limits its science to what current smart people think will be possible. Rail guns, nanites, drones. Not magic. Not transhuman. The remnants are plausible near-future technology that carries the same existential risk as the weapons that ended the old world.

Ancient control of remnants

The ancient-tyrants page covers this in full, but the connection to remnant tech deserves its own note here: the Ancients are not just immortal political leaders. Some of them still control the most powerful remnant systems on the continent. Taking a remnant cache from a territory an Ancient claims is not the same as taking one from unclaimed ruins.

The choice the official site frames is explicit: grow strong enough to challenge the Ancients for their remnants, or work under them and access their machines as tribute. Both paths are “how to beat the endgame” in Paradox language. Neither is a free win.

Remnant tech and the Ideas Tree unlock order

Because the Ideas Tree gates remnant discoveries behind research, you cannot simply rush the most powerful remnant tech in a single playthrough. The Tree requires encounters before it offers advances. A remnant that would otherwise unlock advanced military hardware becomes available only after your rangers have encountered sufficient pre-Fall infrastructure to contextualize it.

This is intentional design. Lind’s stated goal for the Tree is that the map authors the science: you get what you find, and what you find is shaped by where your scouts go and what your nation is ready to understand.

What we are waiting for

The full remnant discovery list, encounter types, research costs, and whether any remnant tech is genuinely safe to deploy without endgame consequences. The playerguidebook.com coverage confirms that Paradox has not published the complete technology catalog. This page will gain a table when official materials provide the data. Track progress on updates and the roadmap.

Until then, treat remnant tech as: powerful, dangerous, and often controlled by someone who will not give it up voluntarily.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Afterworld before launch.

What is remnant technology in Afterworld?

Pre-Fall technology left behind after the cataclysm. Includes power systems, military hardware, medical tech, industrial machinery, and information archives.

Is remnant tech safe to use?

Official copy warns that the same power that ended the old world could end the new one. Treat all remnant tech as high-risk, high-reward.

Do the Ancients control remnant technology?

Some Ancients still control the most powerful remnant systems. Taking their tech means challenging them or serving them. See ancient-tyrants.

How does remnant tech connect to the Ideas Tree?

Encountering remnants on the map is a trigger for the Tree. The Tree decides whether your nation can research a discovery and what it unlocks.
