Who you are when you crawl into the dustlands — and what that costs.

Afterworld Origins Guide

Origins are the first real choice Afterworld has shown, and they are more than a coat of paint. Official materials say you begin as shelterfolk leaving a failing nuclear bunker, as wayward zealots searching for their goddess, or as one of several other playable origins. Press coverage of the B-roll adds prologues and formative Traumas that change starting resources and priorities. This page gathers those pieces so you can plan a first campaign the day the game launches — it is still upcoming, with no Steam date.

Read this beside the origins tier list if you want a ranking, and beside how to play if you want the loop those origins plug into. New players should still start on getting started.

Shelterfolk / Shelterborn

The bunker start is the one Paradox leads with, and alpha footage labels a recommended path as Shelterborn. When the Ancients destroyed themselves, these ancestors hid. Ages later the shelter is failing, and your people crawl into a world they only know from stories. Rock Paper Shotgun’s breakdown of the press reel describes a Shelterfolk variant that turned cannibal in a lean season and leans toward demagoguery. That is a Trauma layered on the origin, not a second game.

Expect this start to teach scarcity, indoor politics, and a nasty relationship with the surface. You will probably have tools or old-world scraps other tribes lack, and social habits that scare neighbors. If you like vault-dweller stories, this is the onboarding origin — still a Paradox tribe, not a Fallout loot shooter. Pair it with settlements because bunker people are not born knowing irrigation.

Zealots in the dustlands

The second named origin is spiritual rather than subterranean: wayward zealots looking for their goddess in the dust. Official copy puts them on equal footing with shelterfolk, which matters. Afterworld wants faith to be a starting wound, not a mid-game civic. A zealot tribe will likely meet the religion systems earlier — orthodoxy, heresy, and the neighbor who refuses to trade because your gods are wrong.

We do not yet have a full roster beyond “several other playable Origins.” Do not trust a fake list of ten clans. When diary two names them, they will be added here and in updates.

Prologues and Traumas

Think of origin as ancestry, prologue as the short story that dumps you on the map, and Trauma as the scar that tweaks stocks and politics. The cannibal lean-season story is the only Trauma described in detail in English press. It implies food crises, leadership that thrives on fear, and diplomacy penalties you will spend the early game paying down — or doubling into.

That structure is why two Shelterfolk campaigns will not feel identical. One prologue might strand you near a river (and therefore near irrigation on the Ideas Tree). Another might strand you under an Ancient’s shadow, which is a Ancient Tyrants problem from month one.

How origins touch every other system

Laws. A Trauma that rewards demagogues will fight a town-hall constitution. Pass laws that match the scar, or spend the opening years in civil strife. Characters. Named officers inherit the origin’s vices; a cannibal elite and a literate council are different talent pools. Diplomacy. Zealots and bunker isolationists will not open the same trade menu. Victory path. Some origins look built to kneel to an Ancient and climb. Others look built to never kneel. The playstyle list maps those fantasies onto announced systems.

How to choose before a build exists

If you want the intended tutorial, pick Shelterfolk and accept whatever Trauma the game recommends. If you want religion theater, pick zealots. If you want multiplayer chaos, wait for the multiplayer guide to explain whether origin bans exist — they have not been announced. If you want to min-max, read the origins tier list and remember every grade is pre-release theory.

The first-look preview is worth a detour here: the cinematic trailer sells a mythic America, while origin screens in the B-roll look like Paradox character-and-policy UI. You are choosing a people, not a shooter class.

When more origins are named, this page will add a table: origin, likely first crisis, likely Ideas, likely Ancient relationship. Until then, treat Shelterfolk and zealots as the only two you can talk about without inventing DLC.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Afterworld before launch.

How many Afterworld origins are there?

Paradox has named shelterfolk and zealots and promised several others. No full roster is public. Watch updates rather than leak compilations.

What is a Trauma in Afterworld?

A formative crisis that changes starting resources and political habits, such as a lean-season cannibal turn among Shelterfolk. See also the origins tier list.

Which origin is best for beginners?

Footage flags Shelterborn as a recommended start. Pair it with how to play and settlements.

Can I change origin mid-campaign?

Not announced. Origins look like campaign-start choices, similar to other Paradox starting setups.
