Afterworld Release Window and Roadmap
What Lind has actually said about timing, diaries, and the alpha.
Afterworld has no Steam date. It also now has a negative date: according to a Gamescom briefing reported by heise on 27 August 2026, game director Dan Lind said the project is still in alpha and will not release this year. That is the most important scheduling sentence published since the announcement. This roadmap page exists so “coming soon” does not get misread as “holiday 2026.” The game remains upcoming. It is not out. Do not buy a GPU for it yet.
Sibling recap: the announcement. Designer text: Dev Diary 1. Parent: updates hub. Practical next click: the wishlist checklist.
Confirmed timeline
- 21 August 2026 — Paradox teases “What is happening across the Paradox Universe?” for the 25th.
- 24 August 2026 — Forum filter and Discord leaks name Afterworld a day early.
- 25 August 2026 — Opening Night Live trailer, Steam page, Dev Diary 1. Lind promises diary two next week, on Tuesday 1 September 2026, “going into some of the world of Afterworld,” plus an ongoing Turns explorer narrative and a newsletter comic, The Report.
- 26 August 2026 — FGS gamescom interview: co-op, competitive multiplayer, mod tools, “hopefully before the actual apocalypse” as a joke instead of a date.
- 27 August 2026 — heise reports the Gamescom briefing: one button at the start, Stellaris-like map battles, alpha, not releasing in 2026.
What “not this year” does and does not mean
It means you should not expect a 2026 box. It does not mean 2027 is confirmed. PDS productions slip. Diaries will fill 2026. A playtest could appear before a store date. This wiki will not invent a quarter. When Steam changes “To be announced,” this page prints the new string the same day.
Alpha also means the B-roll is work in progress. UI, combat, and origin count can still move. The preview already said that. The briefing just made the calendar honest.
What to watch in September
Dev Diary 2 (1 September 2026) — billed as a world diary. Likely map, Turns, lore, maybe a named region. When it lands it gets its own page next to Dev Diary 1 and forces edits on the map guide and origins if a third start is named.
Creator hands-ons — One Proud Bavarian said a deeper Stockholm impression would follow on 1 September. Treat creator posts as color until they match a diary. The community links page is where those videos are listed when we embed them.
Accessibility and “one button”
Lind’s briefing line: it is a Paradox game with only one button at the start. Combined with the store’s “easy to learn, difficult to survive,” that is the onboarding pitch. It is not a control scheme. There is still no keybind table. See getting started and how to play. Hardware remains TBC on system requirements.
How this wiki will use the roadmap
Each future diary, playtest, spec sheet, or date change becomes a child of updates and a patch to the systems guides. We will not pad this page with fake milestones. The live list is short on purpose: announcement, diary one, briefing, diary two when it exists.
If you are assembling a co-op group, send them this page and multiplayer so nobody plans a 2026 LAN. If you are comparing the pitch to other PDS games, use the comparison tool.
Until Steam prints a window, the correct consumer action is still a wishlist, not a calendar reminder for a month Paradox has not named.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about Afterworld before launch.
When does Afterworld come out?
Unknown. Lind said it will not release in 2026 and that it is still alpha. Track changes here and on updates.
Is there a playtest?
Not announced. Wishlist via the checklist so a Steam Playtest ping can reach you.
When is Dev Diary 2?
Lind scheduled it for Tuesday 1 September 2026, focused on the world. It will get its own page beside Dev Diary 1.
Does “not this year” mean 2027?
No year was confirmed. Do not treat a briefing as a ship window. See the preview for what that means for buyers.
