Afterworld Combat and War

You move the armies. The dustland fights the battle. Then you live with the famine.

Afterworld Combat Guide

Combat in Afterworld is still a reconstruction from a Gamescom briefing, official feature copy, and alpha B-roll. The reconstruction is now sharper than it was on announcement day. According to a briefing reported by heise, you command units on the world map, but the battles themselves play out without your direct involvement — the Stellaris pattern, not a Total War real-time layer. Raiding rivals is “always on the table.” Wars of conquest and political struggle are billed features. The Ancients are the late-game wall. This page is the how-to-beat and how-to-raid guide for a game that is still upcoming, still in alpha, and according to Lind will not release in 2026.

Pair it with the map guide for where fights happen and how to play for the loop around them. Do not come here looking for damage tables. None exist.

Map command, not a tactics sandbox

If you wanted to pause and draw attack-move arrows through every bush, Afterworld is not advertising that. The heise report is the only public combat-resolution note we have: units on the world map, battles without direct involvement. That matches a grand strategy that wants you thinking about supply, which army is on which remnant, and whether you can afford the dead. Footage shows a slice of combat in the ten-minute reel; it does not show a separate battle UI Paradox has named.

Until a diary publishes one, assume: you pick the fight, the game rolls the fight, you manage the funeral.

Raids, convoys, and why logistics is a weapon

Official store language says raiding rivals is always on the table and that convoys exist to exploit newly found wealth. A convoy is therefore a military object. In competitive multiplayer, humans will raid it. In solo, AI tribes will too. The settlements guide is half of combat: an army that wins a tile and starves on the way home did not win.

Named characters can captain war parties. That is the Crusader Kings fingerprint. Sending the wrong officer is how you lose a remnant you could not afford to lose. See origins for how a cannibal Trauma might make a better raider and a worse diplomat.

Facing the Ancients

The late fight is political as much as kinetic. You can grow strong enough to challenge immortal pre-Fall leaders, or work under them and climb. Both are “combat” in Paradox language. Full write-up: Ancient Tyrants. Remnant tech from the Ideas Tree can rewrite what your armies are capable of, and official copy warns that the same power that ended the old world could end the new one. Do not assume a nuclear shortcut is a free win.

What “easy to learn, difficult to survive” implies for war

Paradox’s own pitch is a small, approachable beginning that grows into a rich GSG. Lind’s Gamescom line, reported by heise, was that it is a Paradox game with only one button at the start. Combat is the thing that will stop feeling like one button. Early raids may be simple. Empire-scale wars, with famine, schism, and Ancients, will not. The preview is the place for that judgment. This page is the systems note.

Multiplayer war

Co-op can be a shared campaign against the map and the Ancients. Competitive play is the same sandbox with humans in the raid slot. No public rules for pause, simultaneous turns, or host migration. Do not plan a 64-player dustland MMO. See multiplayer.

What we are waiting for

Army types, morale, terrain modifiers, a named battle screen, and whether you can ever take manual control. Diary two (1 September 2026) is billed as a world diary, not a war diary, so combat math may wait. Track it on the roadmap. When numbers appear, they will replace the reconstruction above.

Until then, fight like a logistics player: scout, raid convoys, do not stand still on a dry tile, and do not pick an Ancient war in month three. For a beginner path that does not start with war, use getting started.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Afterworld before launch.

Is Afterworld real-time tactics?

Not as advertised. A Gamescom briefing says you command on the map and battles play out without direct involvement. See the map guide.

Can I raid other tribes?

Official copy says raiding is always on the table. Pair that with settlements so the raid does not starve you.

How do I beat the Ancients?

Challenge them or work under them. Details: Ancient Tyrants.

Are there combat stats yet?

No public tables. Ignore fake weapon lists. Watch updates and the roadmap.
