Afterworld Origins Tier List

This Afterworld origins tier list is a pre-release ranking. The campaign is not out. Letter grades below only cover Shelterfolk / Shelterborn, zealots, and the Traumas and prologues attached to them in official copy and press coverage of the B-roll. Unnamed “several other origins” are not invented as S-tier clans.

Current board

S — Shelterfolk / Shelterborn (recommended start). Footage flags this as the onboarding origin. Official site leads with bunker-dwellers crawling into the dust. You get a readable story, a likely kit of old-world scraps, and a first crisis the UI can tutorialize: the shelter failed, now feed people. If you are bringing a co-op group into an unknown PDS map, this is the start that will exist in every thumbnail. Pair it with settlements.

A — Shelterfolk with the cannibal Trauma. Press description: a lean season, cannibalism, a tilt toward demagoguery. That is a richer political game and a worse neighbor. It probably sings in single-player roleplay and hurts in a diplomatic multiplayer lobby. Ranked A rather than S because we have not seen the numbers, only the story.

A — Zealots looking for their goddess. Second named origin, equal billing on the official site. Faith is a first-class Afterworld system — orthodoxy, doubters, neighbor mythologies — so a start that is already a religion is aligned with the design. Ranked a half-step under Shelterborn only because we have not seen its tutorialization. If diary two shows a clean zealot onboarding, this row moves to S.

B — Any origin dumped next to remnant country. This is a prologue grade more than an ancestry grade. Spawning under an Ancient’s shadow is a fascinating Ancient Tyrants run and a brutal first-hour. Until spawn rules are public, treat “next to the immortal” as a high-variance B.

C — Isolationist custom fantasy. Possible, because you can refuse trade and migrate, but official copy spends more time on other people as resource and threat. If you wanted a pure hermit start, wait for a diary. Do not assume a hidden ranger origin.

Unranked — Unnamed origins. They exist. Listing them as “Raiders of Golgotha, S-tier” would be fan fiction.

What would move a row

A diary that says zealots cannot unlock irrigation without a special encounter would drop them. A diary that says Shelterfolk cannot adopt religion would drop them in a faith-heavy meta. A third named origin with a built-in convoy culture would steal the logistics niche from generic Shelterfolk. Follow Dev Diary 1 and later updates.

How to use this list in a real campaign

1. If you are new, ignore A-tier spice and take Shelterborn. Read getting started.
2. If you want laws and heresy on month one, take zealots and open the Ideas Tree page so you know to seek people, not just rivers.
3. If you want MP chaos, agree the Trauma rules at the lobby using this list as a menu, not a command.
4. If you want to court an Ancient, pick whatever origin the diary eventually flags as remnant-adjacent; today that is an educated B.

This page will gain a table with columns for first crisis, likely Ideas, and Ancient relationship when those cells can be filled without invention. Until then, five rows and a pile of “we do not know” is the ethical list.
