S — Law-and-scarcity state
The official site spends real paragraphs on drafting laws, rationing scarce goods, and watching a political misstep fracture a nation. If your joy is “who eats” and “who speaks,” Afterworld is built for you. Shelterfolk with a civic Trauma, or zealots writing orthodoxy, both feed this style. It will live or die on UI quality we have not seen. Ranked S on design intent, not on a patch.
S — Migrant convoy people
Relocation is a billed feature, not a fail state. Convoys exist to exploit wealth you refuse to live beside. A campaign that treats the map as a seasonal circuit matches the text better than a sacred-capital 4X. If you loved the idea of abandoning a city in Frostpunk, this is your S-tier fantasy. A — Explorer-researcher
The Ideas Tree wants scouts who hunt specific encounters. Ranking this A instead of S until we know how often the map refuses to spawn the river you need. Procedural generation can starve a researcher. It can also create the best diary-worthy runs in the genre.
A — Ancient courtier
Working under an immortal and climbing is confirmed in interview. That is catnip for Crusader Kings brains. Ranked A because court tools are unnamed. When a diary lists offices, this jumps. Guide: Ancient Tyrants.
B — Open raider
“Raiding rivals is always on the table.” Good. B instead of A because a raid-only campaign may bounce off the law-and-famine layer the studio is proud of. In competitive multiplayer this row may become A overnight.
B — Co-op specialist pair
Co-op is confirmed. Specializing (one logistics officer, one diplomat) is a guess that fits PDS history. Ranked B until pause rules and tribe-sharing rules exist. Still the right way to bring a friend who only likes half of a GSG.
C — Pure hermit builder
You can try. The copy keeps shoving other people into your resource sheet. A hermit run is a challenge mode the game may allow and will not tutorialize. The preview already warns that the trailer is lonelier than the systems.
D — Looter-shooter or battle-royale tourist
Afterworld will not become that because you ranked it. If that is your playstyle, this is the wrong game. Go back to getting started and confirm you have the Paradox title.
How to combine with an origin
Shelterborn + law-state is the onboarding combo. Zealots + courtier is the spicy combo if an Ancient looks like a false goddess. Cannibal Trauma + raider is the lobby-wrecker. Use origins to keep those combinations honest.
When victory conditions are named — restore America, replace the Ancients, hold the last wells — this list will add a column. Until then, playstyle is about the journey the diary already described: adapt to survive, then decide what kind of empire the ashes deserve.
