Getting Started with Afterworld
A pre-release onboarding path for Paradox's post-apocalyptic grand strategy game.
Afterworld is an upcoming PC grand strategy game from Paradox Development Studio, published by Paradox Interactive, and listed on Steam as To be announced. Lind said at a Gamescom briefing that it is still in alpha and will not release in 2026 — details on the roadmap. This beginner guide is for players who saw the Gamescom trailer, heard “your empire from the ashes,” and now need a practical reading order. You cannot play the campaign yet. You can understand the loop, pick a likely origin, and avoid mixing Afterworld up with the unrelated zombie MMO that shares a similar name.
If you only open one other page after this one, make it how to play. If you already think in Crusader Kings starts, skip ahead to origins and the origins tier list. News and the first designer essay live on Dev Diary 1.
Confirm you have the right game
Search results currently mix several products named Afterworld or AfterWorld. This wiki covers the Paradox title announced on 25 August 2026 at Opening Night Live. Developer: Paradox Development Studio. Director: Dan Lind, former Hearts of Iron IV game director. Setting: a semi-procedural North America about a century after a future apocalyptic war called The Fall. Platform shown so far: Steam for Windows, with macOS and Linux rows listed as TBC. It is not Roblox, not the 2007 web series, and not the Europe-map zombie survival MMO.
Steam currently lists English audio plus interface support for French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and additional languages (eight total on the store page). This wiki localizes English, French, German, and Spanish.
What you are actually signing up to play
Lind’s first diary frames Afterworld as grand strategy with settlement and survival bolted on, the same way Crusader Kings is GSG plus RPG and Stellaris is GSG plus 4X. Official copy says you begin as shelterfolk crawling out of a failing bunker, wayward zealots hunting a goddess in the dustlands, or another playable origin. You scavenge food, water, and fuel. You found a first camp that may not stay your capital. You meet other bands, write laws, and slowly fill a fogged regional map.
The trailer is cinematic. The B-roll is closer to a living map with named characters, policy screens, and scouting parties. Read the first-look preview if you want that contrast unpacked, and settlements if the logistics half is what sold you.
Five things to do this week
- Wishlist on Steam. There is no pre-order bundle to decode yet. Notification is the whole point. The wishlist checklist lists the official channels worth following so you do not miss diary two.
- Learn the Ideas Tree. Advances are not a 1444–1821 tech file. Crossing a river can teach irrigation; meeting a tribe can teach organized religion. Details: Ideas Tree.
- Pick a mental origin. Shelterfolk (sometimes called Shelterborn in footage) are the onboarding start shown so far. Zealots are the other named origin. Traumas and prologues further twist starting resources. See origins.
- Decide how you want to win. Playstyles already visible: migrate and scavenge; settle and legislate; raid; vassalize; work under an Ancient; or eventually challenge one. Rank those on the playstyle list.
- Join the survivor channels. Forum, Discord, Reddit, and the official YouTube are collected under community links and official links.
Hardware and launch expectations
System requirements on Steam are still TBC for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Do not buy a GPU for Afterworld based on rumor. Bookmark system requirements and wait for Paradox to fill the numbers. Multiplayer is confirmed as both co-op and competitive; that does not mean you need a six-person Discord on day one. Single-player is the core pitch.
Paradox grand strategy launches are long tails. Dev diaries will name laws, map modes, and origin details months before a store date. Treat updates as part of this beginner path, not as optional lore.
Common beginner mistakes (already visible)
Treating the trailer as the UI. The announcement film is mythic. The playable layer is census, supply, and character stats. Assuming a fixed capital. Official text says you can migrate the whole band when the land runs dry. Waiting for a Fallout-style loot shooter. Afterworld is about tribes, laws, and empires. Ignoring the Ancients. They are immortal pre-Fall rulers, not flavor text. Read Ancient Tyrants before you plan a peaceful builder fantasy that the late game may not allow.
When you finish this page, continue to how to play for the hour-to-hour loop, then settlements for food and convoys. If you prefer watching first, the preview sits next to the official B-roll explainers.
This wiki will replace “upcoming” language the day a release date exists. Until then, getting started means getting oriented — not installing a client that Steam does not yet offer.
